Marlins Defeated by Canes in Exhibition Opener

The Marlins season began officially, well at least technically, yesterday with an exhibition matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. The Canes have already played thirteen official contests (plus one exhibition), so they are in much better “game shape” than the Marlins at this point. Still, the Marlins entered yesterday’s game as heavy favorites to win.

On the other hand, one shouldn’t read much into the outcome of a game like this – regardless what the outcome might be. Neither team is necessarily trying to win; both teams are mostly trying to get everyone some playing time and to have some fun. But the Canes won yesterday’s game 9 – 7, marking only their second ever win in an exhibition game against a major league club. So in that sense, it is significant for the Hurricanes. It’s particularly significant when you consider that the Canes first win (and only other) win against a major league club came against the Baltimore Orioles (who have trained in South Florida for many years) in 1982. 1982 of course was the year the Canes won their first national title.

While the Canes are off to a solid 10 – 3 start, the team has been surrounded by a number of questions, including the suspensions of a two key contributors, lackluster defense, and bottom of the lineup production, among others. A win against the Marlins yesterday could help to generate some positive energy within and around the team and could propel them back to Omaha. Only time will tell.

Yesterday’s Marlins starter, Dontrelle Willis, had an interesting quote after the ballgame. He said, “This is no junior college. This is the notorious University of Miami.” While I think I understand Dontrelle’s sentiment, I’m also guessing that Dontrelle will be getting a call from one of his friends in Miami’s athletic department sometime soon, or at least before someone agrees to comp him tickets to his next football game.
