The Book of Mike

"This is no junior college. This is the notorious University of Miami.” -- Marlins starter Dontrelle Willis, after getting knocked around for six runs in 2 1/3 innings by the Canes.

Marlins - Giants Open Thread

FishStripes is down, apparently, so I'm hanging out here tonight.

And this site may be the new Rally Marlin. The Fish are doing well since we came here (and since FishStripes went down).

Comment away. I'm sure we'll get the other site fixed.

The honest explanation from the SBNation tech guy is that he "pulled a Sammy Sosa today and wrenched his back." It may take awhile to fix the server(s).

You can't make this stuff up.

I'm still watching. But I am mixing in some Braves and Yanks-Angels too.

Did the Marlins just bat around in the 5th?

I suppose they had to retire Pierre at some point.

This little expedition back to the world of Blogger is a nice reminder of how much I should appreciate the comments at FishStripes. I love the "reply to" and the relationship between comments.

I love the Extra Innings. I have a chair set up in my living room that allows me to watch different games in different rooms at the same time. Picture in picture is one thing. This is better.

Beckett (per the Marlins feed) has 7 Ks, which is the most he's had since the San Diego road trip.

Atlanta just took a 2-1 lead in the 7th. I might go with that for now. The Angels look like they're going to blow out the Yankees tonight. Vlad already went yard and they're up 8-3.

  • At 10:54 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

did they just say that tonight's crowd is 43,017?

They for sure said it's the second largest crowd in stadium history.

It's been a long time since we had a game like this. It looks like it will be tough to divvy up the Ichthyomancy points tonight.

I love the hustling double - and that Tommy was talking about Delgado knowing as soon as he hit the ball that he could take advantage of Sanchez's arm.

  • At 11:01 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

Wow. I didn't realize how horrific of an arm Sanchez has.

It's nice to see the Marlins taking advantage of it - and hustling so much.

Sorry! I didn't want to email everyone and bother them if they weren't following the game tonight.

Man, these comments suck. I really miss the format on FishStripes. I do like that Fishfan has figured out way to fake comment titles.

Beckett has 64 pitches and 7 Ks through 5 innings.

Easley looks pretty good at short today. That's a tough position to have to play when you get dropped in there after BP. I wonder if he even took grounders at short in pre-game today.

Not problem at all. I just couldn't believe it took me this long to think of it. Not too sharp I suppose.

In case you have the "other" feed, A.J.'s keeping the chart in the dugout tonight. Looks like we'll see him again tomorrow.

Has anyone been to SBC park? It looks pretty nice.

    Clear out the bench.

    Conine in.
    Aguila loosening up.

This could free up some guys to play tomorrow (i.e. if they can rest Delgado, LoDuca, etc) - guys who might have normally taken a day game after a night game off.

  • At 11:12 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

I've been to SBC park once (in 2001 - right after Bonds hit his 500th, I saw him hit one against the Reds). It may be the nicest park I've ever been to.

I'm hoping that Seamus has a review for the stadium after he goes to the game tomorrow.

The views of the game and outside the ballpark are spectacular.

  • At 11:13 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

Tomorrow will be A.J.'s second start since that poll.

We can still pull up the old results, but I think most of us (me included) had him gone by now.

Mini: "No - how much is it to stand right here?"
    Girl: "Oh, I don't know."
    Mini: "It's FREE."

The guy was really funny too, but I think he was playing with Mini.

No way the 49ers can score two touchdowns this late in the game - even if the Dolphins do have Mota in.

No points for Beckett tonight? That was a pretty impressive return from the DL?

Jack clearly can't remember that Mota doesn't have it anymore (granted - tonight is a good night to get him some work).

But given that Jack seems oblivious to Mota's suckitude, I wonder if Jack had to be reminded tonight that Aguila is still on the roster.

  • At 11:43 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

Wiggins - 2003 is over. Mota isn't such hot stuff anymore.

Very strong cases can be made for Lowell and Enc.

  • At 11:44 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

The points tonight are tough. The argument for Beckett (and I don't remember who had who tonight) is that he was efficient with his pitches, but that he still racked up the Ks.

  • At 11:45 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

I think Lowell turned the corner. I wonder if this improves his trade value.

Lowell has to earn a point tonight.

  • At 11:46 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

I was letting Wiggins slide on the Gaylord Bobble-head comment. If nothing else, I knew there was no way that he could have forgotten that tonight was the big night. I'm half sure that he searched for a cheap flight to San Fran today.

  • At 11:48 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

I'd like for them to keep Lowell - whether he's turned the corner lately or not.

But with so many free agents and Pierre, Willis, and Beckett going to arbitration (potentially) this year, they may not feel they can afford everyone. I keep forgetting to link to Berardino's article, but he said earlier this week that the Marlins payroll could go up $20 - $25 million next year if they keep the team intact. Moving Lowell helps to reduce a big chunk of that.

  • At 11:50 PM, July 23, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Beckett did have a RBI but then who doesn't

  • At 11:52 PM, July 23, 2005, Blogger Mike said…

As an added bonus, fans in San Fran got to see a few innings of a major league ball game tonight. For the latter innings they've been treated to some PCL baseball. A doubleheader of sorts.

At least they have a beautiful park.

I'm not sure what to make of Giambi. He sure seems to be back.

I wonder if the benefits of the 'roids stay with you - even after you're off them. I know that Giambi went through those health issues last year, but I still wonder.

Oakland - Texas: this has been a great series this weekend. The A's won today. 9 runs scored in the game. Six homers.

Ballgame. Messenger records the last out with a grounder. Score it 6-3 (Easley - Conine).

Everything in the 9th went just as Jack drew it up earlier.

    Mike - a suggestion

If for some reason FishStripes is down tomorrow so no one can make picks you might consider waving the three player limit for tonight's game and award points to those who contributed.

Just a thought, do with it what you will
