Marlins - Giants Open Thread

FishStripes is down, apparently, so I'm hanging out here tonight.

And this site may be the new Rally Marlin. The Fish are doing well since we came here (and since FishStripes went down).

Comment away. I'm sure we'll get the other site fixed.

The honest explanation from the SBNation tech guy is that he "pulled a Sammy Sosa today and wrenched his back." It may take awhile to fix the server(s).

You can't make this stuff up.

quite an offensive display tonight. Even Becket gets a ribbie. I don't know if it qualifies as the game-winning RBI someone mentioned in the AAB picks, but it's cool

Cool. It was nice to do that a bit last weekend with th efree preview of MLB Extra Innings. I can do that here on the laptop, but's it's never as nice as the TV.

Atlanta just took a 2-1 lead in the 7th. I might go with that for now. The Angels look like they're going to blow out the Yankees tonight. Vlad already went yard and they're up 8-3.

I love the hustling double - and that Tommy was talking about Delgado knowing as soon as he hit the ball that he could take advantage of Sanchez's arm.

    Miguel and another hitter

Not that Miguel really needs it, considering his freakish talent, but I notice that when there's another hitting doing well he seems to always try and one-up them, in a good way. He did it with Pudge, and learned from him. Last year he and Mike went HR for HR throught the entire year (20 each at the Break last year I think), and then again this year. I think it's a good sign.

It's not even just weak, he really threw an odd looking throw there, too. It sailed high and left on him. If you're going to have a weak arm, you have to be able to at least throw straight (a la Manny this year)

    Beckett
Like I said, tough night to choose. I can see the argument for Beckett, I just think that it's fair to say that when scoring six runs in one night, your top three players were probably hitters. They gave him the lead that helped him go freely, not the other way around. His ERA for the night was 3.00, which is nice, don't get me wrong, but the numbers the bats put up were pretty sweet, and the 2 SB's (shoulda been three) and getting on base 4/5 times from JP were pretty great as well.

The points tonight are tough. The argument for Beckett (and I don't remember who had who tonight) is that he was efficient with his pitches, but that he still racked up the Ks.

I think Beckett was able to be more efficient because of the huge scoring. It's a bit of a chicken-egg arguement, so I'm not sure, but that's my take. Also, type in my previous ichtyomancy comment, I said six runs, I meant sixteen. As in two touchdowns with 2 point conversions.

I'd like for them to keep Lowell - whether he's turned the corner lately or not.

But with so many free agents and Pierre, Willis, and Beckett going to arbitration (potentially) this year, they may not feel they can afford everyone. I keep forgetting to link to Berardino's article, but he said earlier this week that the Marlins payroll could go up $20 - $25 million next year if they keep the team intact. Moving Lowell helps to reduce a big chunk of that.

    answer to Roids question
Yes and no. If you can maintain the bulk (through exercixe) that the roids helped you attain, then you are in a sense maintaining the benefits. The homrone levels in your body will even out, though, so the actual steroid effects do not last. At least, that's what I learned in Endocrinology in regards to steroid hormones in general, not neccseraily steroid supplementation.

I think I did get called a jerk.. Not sure why, maybe I sounded like a smart-ass? Sorry if I did. I'm no steroids expert, but I am a physiologist by training, so I figured it would be alright. Then again, tone is hard to convey in text, and the word "jerk" is generally said in good humor around here, so I'll take it that way.

    Jerk. :-)

Thanks for backing me up Wiggins

I will go attempt to flip out like a Ninja, but no promises of success.

    Go Marlins!

    Mike - a suggestion

If for some reason FishStripes is down tomorrow so no one can make picks you might consider waving the three player limit for tonight's game and award points to those who contributed.

Just a thought, do with it what you will

A lot of other guys probably don't know this site too well, and couldn't find it without the link on FS! Mike should put a note up on FS when it gets back up to make sure to check here and Hooray, Beer! in case it goes down again.

Us old-timers always know where the action is, though...

We may be sad creatures - but at least we know and admit it.

Seriously, though - I've said this before. I really think that it is the sense of community that we have over there that we all love and that keeps bringing us back. I know for me - it is hard to find anyone up here in Maryland that is a Marlins fan. I went to Mike's blog to learn about Marlins stiff and wound up finding some cool friends that I have something in common with. I don't think I am completely unusual in that, and I don't think it is as un-healthy as it sounds. We have a good thing over there. I hope we can keep it up.
